We develop exercises that simulate the postures, positions and activities patients might do at home or work in order to return to their lives or jobs after an injury or surgery. Functional training often involves weight bearing activities targeted at the core muscles of the trunk. Functional training attempts to adapt or develop exercises which
allow individuals to perform sports or activities of daily life more successfully. This may lead to better muscular balance and joint stability, decreasing the number of injuries or re-injury. The benefits of functional training come from the use of exercises that emphasize the body’s natural ability to move
in three planes of motion. We focus the effort on engaging the stabilizers as well as the peripheral muscles. We use dumbbells, medicine balls, body-weight training (with and without assistive devices), Physioballs, resistance tubes and bands, rocker and wobble boards, balance disks, sandbags, foam rollers and more to assist us. With this we
can regain the Big Three–strength, flexibility and balance, to return the patient to their optimal level.

The Healing Power of Three - Mind, Body and Spirit
Bryan Hoppe has provided excellent physical therapy for me throughout the last 10
years of my gymnastics career and into my collegiate career. I have endured some
career threatening injuries, but have always felt confident in Bryan’s ability to treat
me, get me healthy, and back in action quicker than I expected. The atmosphere at
Phase Three Physical Therapy is positive. I always feel comfortable and welcomed
by the staff there. Bryan’s care for my injuries has served a very important role in my ability to persevere as a gymnast. Thank you Bryan for helping me achieve success in gymnastics!   --Kayla K., U.C. Davis Gymnast
